Format-specific captaincy windows
The desk's captaincy matrix shifts by format because the multiplier sits differently and the role balance changes. On T20 contests, captaincy lands on powerplay runners and death-overs finishers; on ODI contests, middle-overs spinners carry the largest expected points delta; on Test contests, the second-innings spinner index drives the call. T10 contests change the math entirely — eight of eleven batters bat, so ceiling becomes the dominant input.
Below is the desk's cheat sheet per format. The numbers are derived from the last 18 months of FanCode contest data, calibrated against FanCode's published contest register, and re-cut every Monday.
T20 captaincy window
Powerplay overs (1-6) and death overs (17-20) carry 64% of the ceiling variance. Captain your top-order anchor on a flat pitch where dew is moderate; captain a death-overs seamer on a slower surface.
ODI captaincy window
Middle-overs spinners (11-40) are the captaincy delta on every FanCode ODI fixture. Pick 7 contests over-index on allrounders in this band. If you have a budget band, slot two spinners plus the allrounder.
Test captaincy window
Spinner index on day-3 and day-4 wickets is the FanCode Test captaincy call. Seam-heavy attacks lose ceiling value after day-2 rough begins. Spinner-heavy attacks always win the captaincy slot at Chepauk, Eden and Ahmedabad.
T10 captaincy window
Boundary-per-ball rate is the only relevant variable. Eight of eleven batters typically play; pick ceiling players over role players regardless of historical form. Differential picks should value franchise openers — they bat maximum balls.

Can I see the team sheet before the toss?
Where the league publishes early, the desk publishes early. The most common early-team-sheet case is the women's T20 leagues and Test series ahead of day 1. For IPL and ISL, we hold until the official toss.
What about an abandoned fixture?
Where a fixture is abandoned, all open contests are closed without a winner; the desk records the abandonment on the corrections log the same day.
Are there fixtures in other leagues?
The FanCode desk covers the T20 Mumbai league, ILT20, BBL, CPL, and the Asia Cup fixtures on the international side. Football covers ISL and AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Kabaddi covers PKL every match. Tennis covers the ATP India leg.
Reading the venue ledger — surface, dew, and the toss
The match centre's deeper cut is in the venue ledger, not the schedule. The surface history tells you what role balance to build; the dew factor tells you whether to bat first or second; the toss narrative tells you how to play the captaincy window. This section walks through the 14 venues we track — Chepauk, Eden Gardens, Wankhede, Arun Jaitley, Chinnaswamy, Mohali, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Indore, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, Rajkot and Mumbai's Brabourne (the second string when CCI hosts the warm-up). Each entry carries the 18-month average 1st-innings score, the average dew factor by month, and the pace-vs-spin split for innings one and innings two.
The captain's last-five at a venue matters more than the career average. A wrist-spin allrounder with 6 wickets at Chepauk in the last 5 innings has a higher ceiling tier than one with 22 wickets across 30 matches — the recency is the lever. The desk tracks this for every venue; the matches page surfaces the venue block on the right rail of every fixture card.
Dew factor — the 12th-over window
Indian conditions are dew-heavy on coastal and riverine grounds (Wankhede, Eden, Brabourne, DY Patil). The dew factor typically crosses 0.6 by the 12th over in evening fixtures, and 0.75 by the 16th. Where the dew factor is 0.55 or above, the side batting second has a measurable 12-15 run advantage, and the captain arithmetic shifts: the captain sits on a death-overs bowler whose wrist-spin or slow left-arm orthodoxy struggles with a wet ball, and the differential slot becomes a hard-hitting top-order anchor.
Pace vs spin split
On a 0.30-0.40 spin split (Chinnaswamy, Wankhede, DY Patil, Ahmedabad), pace carries the death-overs wickets and spin carries the middle overs. On a 0.50+ spin split (Chepauk, Lucknow, Eden, Hyderabad), spin carries both phases. The role-balance band shifts from one pace + two spin to two pace + two spin on the dust-bowl surfaces. The captain picks move accordingly.
Reading the schedule — a deeper cut
The match centre's deeper cut goes beyond the status ribbon. It carries the toss narrative, the team sheet as published, the surface reading, the dew factor window, and the captain's last-five at the venue. The desk publishes each of these on the relevant fixture lane within 30 minutes of the team sheet landing.
Where the schedule shifts mid-week (rain delay, broadcast schedule change, last-minute squad update), the desk publishes the shift within 5 minutes of a verifiable update on Sportradar. Older match centre entries retain their status as published — the desk does not retroactively rewrite history.
